What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin to exfoliate and remove damaged outer layers of the skin. The goal of a chemical peel is to improve the appearance of the skin, reduce the signs of aging, and/or address skin concerns such as acne, scarring, hyperpigmentation, or uneven texture.

There are three main types of chemical peels: superficial, medium-depth, and deep. Superficial peels use mild acids such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) to exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin, resulting in minimal peeling or flaking. Medium-depth peels use stronger acids such as glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to penetrate deeper into the skin, causing more significant peeling and flaking. Deep peels use the strongest acids such as phenol to deeply penetrate the skin, resulting in the most dramatic results but also requiring the longest recovery time.

The process of a chemical peel typically involves the following steps:

  • Cleansing: The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup.
  • Prepping: Depending on the type of peel, the skin may be prepped with a special solution or cream to help the peel penetrate deeper.
  • Application: The chemical solution is applied to the skin using a brush, sponge, or cotton ball. The solution may be left on for a few minutes or longer depending on the desired level of exfoliation.
  • Neutralization: The peel is neutralized with a special solution to stop the exfoliating process.
  • Post-treatment care: Depending on the type of peel, the skin may require special aftercare such as avoiding sun exposure or using specific skincare products.

A chemical peel can result in smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin. However, it's important to work with a trained and licensed professional to ensure a safe and effective treatment. Chemical peels may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain skin conditions or who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
